PHOTOGRAPHY OF TECHNOLOGY

At times I get asked to photograph scientific equipment or apparatus for a presentation or publication. It is easy to get fascinated with the shiny surfaces and futuristic angles and curves, and with the possibilities of turning these interesting technology creations into art. Through use of selective angles, lighting, filters, and backgrounds, I have taken a number of photographs of scientific devices that have been widely published, including in technical magazines and nespapers, and even in several calendars from technology companies. Two of the photographs I like best are below.

[NDP Instrument]

Neutron depth profiling instrument at a nearby nuclear research reactor facility. This system is enclosed in a large vacuum cylinder before being placed in front of the neutron beam from the reactor, so few people ever get to see the beautiful angles and curves built into the construction. The eye-catching rainbow is from the diffraction grating effect caused by the semiconductor array etched on the silicon disk under investigation. It was not visible with conventional lighting, but was caused by the flash system used to light the instrument.

[Neutron Focusing]

A newly developed "lens" made of very small high purity quartz capillary tubes, used for focussing cold neutrons (i.e., neutrons with very low kinetic energy). This photograph was taken while it was sitting on a specially selected background (a chair with burgundy colored upholstery!) at the NIST Cold Neutron Research Facility in Maryland.

I hope that you have enjoyed my Technology photographs. Thank you for visiting my web site, and I hope you continue on to the Gallery Section which is next. The Gallery Section is where I have placed a number of my travel and fine art photographs, other than the ones in the above topics Just click on the appropriate link below to take you there.
