Butterflies are beautiful creatures. At a park near where I live they have annual butterfly exhibits, where their entire life processes from beginning to end are on display. They have butterflies from all over the world, with new ones hatching most every day. It seems like the ones from Central America are the most colorful and interesting.

Photographing butterflies is an interesting challenge. I particularly like to use a long focal length macro lens. It allows the photographer to get a large image and at the same time keep a respectful distance away from them, so as to not spook them. Below are a few of my butterfly photographs.

"Butterfly & Flower" / This photograph was taken using a 200mm macro lens on a DSLR camera, handheld in existing light. I like how the colors of the flower complement the colors of the butterfly.

"Butterfly & Green" / In this photograph I like the contrast between the brown and orange of the butterfly and the bright green of the surrounding foliage.

"Black and Red Butterfly" / It seems like the butterflies are especially drawn to flowers that are complimentary to or contrasting with their own colors.
